Cardboard vs. Plastic Moving Boxes: The Real Cost Comparison

Ask anyone planning a move what they'll pack in and the default answer is cardboard. It feels free, or at least cheap. But once you add up everything a cardboard move actually costs — money, time, and aggravation — renting reusable plastic totes wins more often than people expect.

The hidden costs of cardboard

A typical 2-bedroom home needs 50–60 cardboard boxes. Buying new moving boxes runs $2–4 each, so you're already at $100–240 before you've packed a single plate. Then come the extras:

• Tape: 4–6 rolls of packing tape, another $20–30.
• Assembly time: every box has to be unfolded, taped on the bottom, and later broken down. Figure 2–3 minutes per box — that's two to three hours of your life, on both ends of the move.
